Matushka Rose Boryk Kovalchuk, 81, of 567 Wilbur Avenue (formerly of Third Street, Masury, OH), died of a heart ailment at 11:35 PM Monday, June 2, 1980 in the emergency room of South Side Hospital, where she was taken from her home.

Mrs. Kovalchuk was born Nov. 22, 1901, in Pittsburgh, PA, a daughter of Michael and Mary Boryk, and came to Youngstown, OH in 1979 from Masury, where she had lived 10 years.

On November 21, 1922 she married Sawa J Kovalchuk in Ansonia, CT. Mr. Kovalchuk was then ordained to the Holy Priesthood on December 4, 1922, and the first years of her life as the wife of a priest were spent in the Province of Sasketchewan, Canada. Parish records state that Fr. Sawa and Matushka Rose were assigned to the Holy Dormition Orthodox Church in Benld, IL from 1952 to 1960. His last assignment was at All Saints Orthodox Church in Amsterdam, OH. Archpriest Sawa died July 26, 1976.

Mrs. Kovalchuk was a member of the Nativity of Christ Russian Orthodox Church in Youngstown, OH and an honorary member of the sisterhood.

At the time of her death, she left a son, Archpriest Feodor Kovalchuk, pastor of the Nativity of Christ Russian Orthodox Church; a daughter, Mrs. Nadia Sowa at home, and four grandchildren.

Services were at 9:30 AM Thursday, June 5, 1980 in the church. Burial was alongside her husband at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown, OH.
