Mary W. Spudich was born December 16, 1917 to Mary (Popilchak) and Louis [Lukasz (Luke)] Wasylenko into a home with three older siblings. She was soon baptized at the Holy Dormition Orthodox Church in Benld, IL in 1918, and grew up in Benld and in the Holy Dormition parish.
Mary's siblings included her brothers John, Nick, and Michael Wasylenko, and her sisters Ann Popowchak, Eva Gress, Anastasia Dubbs, and Olga Zebrun.
Mary married Peter John Spudich Sr. (originally of Sawyerville, IL) on Sunday, October 17, 1937 at the Holy Dormition Church in Benld, and soon thereafter they moved to the St. Louis area, where they started and nurtured a beloved family.
Mary was the mother of five children: Mary Kathryn Schwaninger, Eugenia Lowry, John Peter Spudich, Peter John Spudich, Jr., and Barbara Jean Haywood. In her older years Mary had the joy of becoming a grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.
Mary was a lifelong devout communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church in St. Louis, Missouri, where she was also a choir member for decades.
Preceded in death by her husband, Mary passed away December 21, 2014 in San Antonio, TX surrounded by family. Her funeral was held at St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Church in St. Louis on Monday, December 29, 2014, and on the same day she was buried at the Holy Dormition Cemetery in Benld.
